The saying went, as goes Favre, so went JK. They did go Favre one better.
JK made the playoffs, Favre did not. JK finished the regular season 7-7 and
squeaked into the playoffs thanks to their uncanny ability to win games
against teams in their division. The season started with a rollicking 49-46
win over the Mo-ha. The next week, they won a game with the lowest winning
score of the season, and the lowest winning score in five years, 16-12 over
Barry.
Outside the division, they pounced on Talbot, got hammered by Bud, whipped
Best when he was slumping and then got hammered again by Calvin. They scored
46 and lost to Wallace, and then CZ got the better of them in a Monday
match of QBs where Seattle pounded Green Bay. With Favre slumping, JK became
waiver wire wizards. They seemed to be able to pick a defense that did the
job, and then one of the true surprises of '99, Denver's Olandis Gary.
Gary led to a very satisfying win over hated rival Stroupe. However, in
week 10, they bottomed out with 9 points in a loss to Outlaw. At the
return to division play, JK stood 5-5.
The East division was anybody's for the taking. Thanks to the good start
in the first two weeks, JK had some tie breakers in their back pocket. They
would need them. The got to 3-0 in the divison with dramatic squeaker 28-26
when Olandis Gary scored in overtime on Monday night. The win also put
them in first place. However from Monday night heroes to Monday night
bums. In week 12 against the Mo-ha, they failed to load up on Packers against
San Francisco (among other mistakes) and they lost 31-29. Their third
straight squeaker was also a loss, 35-32 to AB. Although now last in their
division, their season appeared to be in shambles. However, thanks to tiebreakers
and their best game of the season, a 60-38 pounding of Peil, they were in the
playoffs. Draftees Green Bay QB and Alstott did their job, but much credit
had to go to their waiver wire work as Olandis Gary, KC D and Tony Gonzales
came up big.
In the playoffs, they started strong on a Saturday game as Gonzales and
KC's D had 22 points. Mo-ha had an answer. In a controversial move,
they waited until late to start Mushin Muhammad. The Panther WR got back
19 of those points. Sunday belonged to Mo-ha. There was a hope on Monday
with Favre facing the suspect Viking secondary, but Favre threw 0 TDs. They
only TD they did get was on a Fake Field Goal TD where the holder was a back up
QB. All that did was counter Mo-ha Fake Field Goal TD from Dallas on Sunday.
They only two in the NFL this season.
